Our Green Policy
Saltire Patisserie serving a sustainable future
Sustainability at Saltire
At Saltire Patisserie, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and embedding sustainability into every aspect of our operations.
We recognize the importance of responsible business practices and continuously seek innovative ways to minimize waste, lower emissions, and contribute to a greener future for our community.
Electric Vehicles
In recent years, we have transitioned to using electric vehicles for all our deliveries! This shift allows us to significantly reduce our carbon emissions while maintaining efficient customer service. We are actively contributing to cleaner air quality and lowering our environmental footprint by using electric vehicles.
Additionally, we continue to explore advancements in electric vehicle technology and optimize delivery routes to enhance efficiency further and minimize energy use.

What We're Doing to Help!
We are dedicated to supporting local businesses and reducing our carbon footprint by sourcing all our ingredients from within Scotland. By prioritizing locally sourced goods, we decrease transportation emissions and contribute to the sustainability of Scottish agriculture and food production.
Furthermore, we work closely with our suppliers to maintain ethical and environmentally friendly farming practices, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability at every stage of our supply chain.
Midlothian Business Green Pledge
We are proud to have signed the Midlothian Business Green Pledge, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable business practices. As part of this pledge, we have agreed to:
-
Switch to a 100% renewable energy supplier at contract renewal or earlier.
-
Encourage our employees to use active transport, such as walking or cycling to work, to lower transport-related emissions.
-
Promote flexible work arrangements, including work-from-home options where feasible, to further reduce energy consumption.
-
Transition to sustainable products by using paper instead of plastic whenever possible.
-
Implement comprehensive recycling and reuse programs for equipment, waste, and other materials to minimize landfill contributions.
As part of our pledge, we continuously review our progress and explore new strategies to improve our environmental performance. This includes seeking opportunities to integrate renewable energy solutions such as solar panels and energy-efficient appliances into our operations.

Staff Training in Sustainable Practices
Our employees receive training in sustainable business practices to ensure that environmental consciousness is embedded into our daily operations. Staff are educated on:
-
Proper recycling and waste management techniques.
-
Daily actions to minimize energy and water use.
-
Best practices for maintaining an eco-friendly workplace.
In addition to our internal training programs, we provide staff with opportunities to participate in sustainability workshops and collaborate with environmental organizations, staying informed about best practices and new developments in sustainable business operations.
Circular Economy Partnership
We are proud to partner with Bright Green Business and Zero Waste Scotland on a Circular Economy project aimed at reducing food waste.
A key initiative under this partnership is repurposing spent grain from local breweries into baked goods. Since 85% of brewing waste comes from the disposal of spent grain, this project significantly reduces waste while introducing innovative and sustainable products to our menu.
Additionally, we are pleased to welcome an intern working with us on this initiative, bringing fresh ideas and insights to our sustainability efforts.
We seek additional opportunities to reduce waste through ingredient repurposing, composting, and improved inventory management techniques to support the circular economy further. These efforts ensure we make the most of available resources while reducing unnecessary waste.
